Furtive Little Feelings

The collected thoughts of Jake de Oude

The site

The name

I took the name from the lyrics of the song I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous by Frank Turner:

And I know I'm not the one who is habitually optimistic,
but I'm the one who's got the microphone here so just remember this:
Life is about love, last minutes and lost evenings,
about fire in our bellies and furtive little feelings,
and the aching amplitudes that set our needles all a-flickering,
and help us with remembering that the only thing that's left to do is live.

And here is the video:

I've listened to Mr. Turner since I first saw him as the supporting act for The Levellers at their 2008 gig in the Effenaar. (Coincidentally, he opened up with Prufrock.) He's a talented musician with an easy-to-like presence. Most of all, however, I love his songs, that have a romantic flair and great lyrics.

History

I started this website in, I think, 2000. I needed a spot to publish stuff and I had just taught myself the basics of HTML and CSS. Before that, I think I used my student's account at the Eindhoven University of Technology and published a Frontpage webpage there. I still have those files somewhere, but they were horrible.

So, in 2000 I started this site. The site looked a lot different as my page was pretty much the main Sandcat's layout. It was called "Jake @ Sandcat" and it served me well in that form until 2013.

At that time I was finally fed up with the ancient look and decided to make a new design, incorporating some things I'd learned since starting out. The early versions of the design can be found here.

Specs

Furtive Little Feelings runs on a Centos server, running Apache and PHP. The website uses the Sandcat Web System, developed by Stijn Hoop. I've developed the theme myself on a base of HTML5 Boilerplate, which in turn uses Normalize.css and Modernizr.

I also use two fonts from Google Fonts. The main headers are in Fredericka the Great by Tart Workshop, while the subheader "The collected..." and the main navigation bar are done in Nothing You Could Do by Kimberly Geswein.
