General
Reference numbers given below refer to entires in the '1825' Rule Book.
The board and Tiles are added to those in use at the start of the game. The brown pawn, representing the Cambrian Railway, is placed in hexag R8 (west of Shrewsbury) and the pink pawn, representing the Taff Vale railway, is placed in hexag V8 (Cardiff/Newport).
The pawns indicate where these Companies will start and prevent any other Company from laying a Tile on hexag R8. A tile may be laid on hexag V8 but a second marker Token must not be placed on this hexag in advance of the Taff Vale.
Halts
A 'Halt' Tile may be used to promote any #8 Tile on the board subject to paragraph 4.3 and rules 4.3. 1 to 4.3.5. The Halt itself may be positioned on either the existing or the new alignments. A Halt is not considered to be a Station with regard to 4.3.2. Halts do not promote further.
Halts are optional scoring stops for 'T' Trains but are ignored by all other Trains.
Minor Companies
The Cambrian and Taff Vale Railways are Minor Companies and are each represented by four Share certificates. The Directors' Certificates representing four Shares (40% of the value of the Company) are sold first. The three double Shares, each representing 20% of the Company, are then available for purchase. If another player acquires all three double Shares, he or she will become Director and Share certificates are exchanged as described in 5.3.
In most respects a Director runs a Minor Company in the usual way. Minor Companies run after other Companies during an Operating Round. They then run in initial price order (Ref 4.1.3) with formation order used 'to resolve ties.
Starting a Minor Company
Depending on the kits being used there may be several Minor Companles in a game. These are available simultaneously as soon as ALL Shares in ONE of the Companies with a £71 initial value has been bought. When this kit is played with 1825 Unit 1 this will be the SECR but if it is being played with Unit 1 combined with Unit 2 it may be any of these Companies.
The player purchasing the director's Shares fixes the initial price of a Minor Company at any of the values shown on the Share Price Index or SPI. The company's marker pawn is removed from the board and placed at this price on the SPI. The price paid for these four Shares Is thus four times the Individual price shown an the SPI. The pawn does not move again. It now indicates the price of each new Share in that Company. (Twice the quoted price must, of course, be paid for each double Share.)
The chosen Share price must be at least one tenth of the cost of the Train shown on the Director's certificate, otherwise the Company would not be able to run. This Train must be paid for in advance of all other activities of the Company. If the money raised from the purchase of the Director's Shares is sufficient the Company may operate without any other Shares having to be bought. Money left over, and the proceeds from the sale of additional Shares as they are bought, is passed to the Company in Company Credits, rounded down where necessary. (The balance being rectified as extra Shares are bought.)
Once the Company has bought its Train it places one of its Tokens on its initial price on the SPI. This Token will move with changes In the Share price in the normal way. The second Token is placed on the board and constitutes the Company's Base. Minor Companies are not allowed additional Bases.
Minor Company Operation
The Train shown on the Director's certificate may not be sold to another Company. Additional Trains may, however, be bought in the usual way. Track construction, train operation and the payment, or otherwise, of dividends follow the normal rules. It will be possible for a Minor Company to earn revenue in its first operating turn if it has a suitable Route.
It following the sale of Shares into the Bank Pool, no player holds four Shares in a Minor Company it becomes moribund and ceases to operate. The Share price will then fall in the usual way.
Cambrian Railway
This Company places a #5 or #6 Tile on hexag R8 in its first turn and lays its Base Token on this Station. The Company owns a 'U3' Train which may call at ANY number of small Stations but no more than three large Stations. A small Station may form the end of a Route.
Taft Vale Railway
This Company owns a '4T' Train. 'T' Trains run generally according to the rules of Paragraph 4.5 but they have additional privileges:
- A small Station or Halt may form the end of a Route.
- Two small Stations on the same Tile or hexag may form part of the same Route.
- 'T' trains are the only ones allowed to call at Halts. Halts may be added to a Route in addition to the usual number of Stations allowed.

The shareholding limits (Table 3) may need to be raised when Minor Companies are included in the game. The number of extra certificates permitted per player is as follows:
