Busy few weeks

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

It’s been a while since the last update, it seems. And with good reason, lots of things have happened. But, now I am finally at home, relaxed, recovering (fingers crossed) from a slight illness, so time to type up some events :)

Les Miserables

Les Miserables

My parents celebrated their 60th birthdays at the beginning of this year. Us kids thought long and hard to come up with a nice gift. It wasn’t easy, but then we hit upon a good idea: we’d take them to a musical of their choice.

Of course, in the Netherlands, a choice means either Scheveningen or Utrecht. Ow, or the Efteling theatre (and I’m probably doing a disservice to some travelling musicals in NL, but the point is clear, methinks). In short, there is no real “choice” in NL. However, we’re not bound to the Netherlands. In fact, the musical capital of the world, London’s West End, is only a short flight from Eindhoven airport. So we offered them a trip to London, and dinner and a show on West End.

As we’d all join, we had to juggle five calendars, which meant this trip was postponed till after the summer (and planned long in advance). My parents opted to go by train, and Anke and Rogier joined them. I’ve done the train journey before, and while it is nice, it takes so long, I prefer to fly (direct connection London-Lux). Since I left roughly at the same time as the others, I was in a London bookstore, shopping and browsing to my heart’s content, when their eurostar train was about to leave. Which gave me another few hours in the store… yummy!

At any rate, we all spent a few days in London, and had a blast. We went to see Les Miserables, which was a fair deal more upbeat than the trodden, steaming pile of desolate despair that I thought it would be after reading the story on Wikipedia. The day before that, Anke, Rogier and I chanced upon the Royal Albert Hall. We browsed the programme, to see if anything interesting would be on. There was — at least if you’re my mum :) So we surprised my mom&dad with tickets to that too, and they greatly enjoyed it :)

Hoopje

Hoopje weekend

Two days after coming back from London, it was time for the (somewhat) annual Hoopje weekend: a weekend for the group of friends from Eindhoven. Ever since we finished studies and got ourselves jobs, we’ve drifted apart a bit. Different calendars, even harder to juggle. So someone had the bright idea to suggest a weekend to ourselves. And so we have, for a few years now. It is a great opportunity to meet everyone again. And things (people) have changed: couples came, got married, got kids. I drink less beer than before — hell, we all do (we took 10 crates, 8 remaining at the end… hmmms.) But it was good to be there and to see everyone, and to catch up some bits and pieces. Which reminds me: I ought to phone them more often. I played a bit of a PS3 tower defence game, and a lot of guitar. All of which was fun, but not as much as seeing everyone there and seeing them go about their business, but happy to be there.

Ronald’s visit

Fast forward one weekend, and we’re at today and Ronald’s visit. Ronald called me at one point, with the goal of picking a date for a visit. We managed, and so I called him on Wednesday eve to arrange final details. During that call, he let it slip he was off from work on Thursday and Friday as well, so I promptly invited him over for those days. I was lucky, in that his plans could be done on Thursday, and so he arrived Thursday evening. He bravely joined for my dance/sports/aerobics class (we were doing the part from 00:16-00:40 — and no it doesn’t look anything like that when I attempt to move my body). That was quite brave of him, since we were in week 5 (not that I informed him beforehand though ;-). Other than that, we had a very good time with a cheese fondue evening (yummy) and we even played a bit of Super Mario Galaxy 2 (long time no play! Fun!). Of course, we also went shopping and almost bought yet another: guitar (me) and a playmobil Christmas nativity set (him). In the end, we constrained ourselves because we both had these toys already. However, we might still succumb to seduction :)

Before he left, Ronald even managed to (1) fix my couch (Rogier: take note, it doesn’t slide anymore — you’ll love it) and (2) fix the rack in my garage that was wonky. So now I have another set of happy memories, good discussions (cheese fondue was fun :) and a better couch and more storage space. Very happy me!

Happy New Year!

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

So many updates to post, I’m skipping a long story and going straight to the list-format:

  • Finished both Bowser’s inside story and Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box. (±36 hrs and ±18 hrs, respectively).
  • I visited Stijn, Maartje and Iris, was great! But that’s none of your business :)
  • I went to see Bobbie’s new place, it’s pretty cool but I came a bit soon — Bobbie hasn’t moved in yet (put in furniture, but usually sleeps elsewhere).  So, I better revisit him later :)
  • Visited Ronald as well, though failed to see his new house. Still wondering who will see whose house first, him mine or me his. Might make an appointment for the 23rd just to win ;-)
  • Bro came here, and we had the full ritual, and it was *good*!! inducto-gourmet, Battlestar, Mario,  Ikea, shopping, car… all the essential ingredients were there :)
  • Finished Battlestar Galactica, the reimagining. Not fully happy with the ending, but okay. Can’t win ’em all :)
  • Redecorated the place. It’ll probably be a few days before I’ve finished building the new furniture, actually :) But most has been done, and looks good, really good. Will take pictures.
  • New furniture offers new ways of storing stuff (finally! racks for in the garage!), so probably within $IMTOOLAZY I’ll have sorted out some of my stuff and make more use of the available space :)
  • Bianca and Matthijs are coming over next weekend!!
  • Dutch television is turning stupider and stupider. I’m not talking content, I am talking dubbing. It’s evil, it’s bad, and we should put a stop to it.  I mean, subtitles appear to be used more often in the news (to subtitle people talking Dutch with an accent) than for cartoons…

That’s it from the Bourg! Happy New Year to all!

Go go go London, you know what they say!

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

London was aaaaaaaaawwwwweeee….some!!!
Phantom of the OperaWe arrived on Saturday. Bro & Sis were delayed (traffic), so I got myself a book, and started reading (finished it yesterday :). Within two hours, Anke & Rogier arrived, and after some phoning, we found eachother and were on the way to the hostel! Hostel was pretty good, though the room bordered on a very busy street… didn’t sleep well, then again, I didn’t go to London to sleep well.

First evening we just went out and for a walk, and happened upon a free theatre right outside the mayor’s office. The play was actually a lot better than I anticipated. I figured it would be a single actor, perhaps maybe as much as three people, and that it would be a rather boring affair, not well played. But no. Imagine my surprise when a group of about 12 actors were singing with verve, dancing, acting well, changing costumes, etc. The story was “Jason and the Argonauts“, and it was delivered in an incredibly fun and exciting way. We had just arrived in London, and we were stumbling upon fun :) Afterwards, we stumbled 20 metres on and found ourselves in a roller disco! Well, being untrained we all refrained from trying it, but it did remind me of going skating.. I definitely will in the near future.

The evening ended at the roof terrace bar of our hostel. As we didn’t realise that the bar would be open, we brought some of our own drinks. Then we met some people, it was fun, and we ran out of drinks. Since the bar didn’t serve anything interesting, I made a quick stop at a nightstore and we had something more to drink… As a result, I was fast asleep before my birthday :)

Harry Potter and the Half Blood PrinceSunday we slept in, and went to Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park. We happened to arrive early, so we took our time, enjoyed the sun and just hung about in the park a bit. After a while, we started to explore the park and happened upon a pond with pedalo’s. We lounged about on the pond for almost an hour, got more of a tan, and then we set out to score some theatre tickets. Unfortunately, there were no tickets that were interesting to all of us available, so we settled on Harry Potter. The movie started out in a fantastic way! We were in London and had lounged about London quite a bit in our 1.5 days of being here. Walked about South Bank, Picadilly Circus, London bridge, Tower Bridge, Millenium Bridge, the London Eye, St. Paul’s… We had seen quite a number of the sights already (not stopping to admire, because we all had done so before — we just passed them at one point or another). The movie commences with some Death Eaters flying over and through London, past all the places we had seen, past the skyline we had admired… it was very cool to see all of that while being in London :)

The rest of the movie was okay too, although (for my tastes) it is really an in-between story. It sets the stage for the final book, which is necessary, but in itself it’s just not that interesting. Well, not too surprisingly, the movie suffers from this as well. However, if you know the story, you’ll roughly know what to expect. Upside: the new actor for Dumbledore (I call him new, even though the “old” one only lasted one movie) finally has a moment in which he comes across at pretty capable, and perhaps even a bit cool. It is about time he did though. The old one just dripped awesomeness all over the movie, and this one finally gets a Crowning Moment of Awesome.

Other than that: Monday we went to the Phantom of the Opera.  It’s a horror. I didn’t know, and that made it pretty unsettling for me. Of course, the music was still awesome :) On Monday, we also checked out the Prime Meridian in Greenwich. Boring! But the boat ride back (with a swifth catamaran) definitely made up for it.

Tuesdays I got Rogier a newspaper for breakfast (it was his birthday, after all), and we checked out Covent Garden (really cool place to be) and Camden Market (check out my new jacket!). After that, we chilled with Anke’s friend Bart at the far west side of London. Tuesday was good :)

That’s sort of what happened in London. Have to admit, on Tuesday I came across the t-shirt “No I don’t have F#$%^KING Facebook” quite some times. Later in the evening, when I hadn’t bought it, someone actually asked me for my Facebook. Guess I should’ve gotten the shirt anyway ;-)

Exploring Guildford with visitors

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Through the Looking Glass

I’ve had two visitors in Guildford (so far), Jennifer and Michiel. Jennifer came in first, and apart from chatting a bit despite being a bit caught up with our own affairs at the time, we did have a good time together and we actually ended up exploring a bit of the city together. But I’ve written about that before.

Thing is, Michiel visited me the other day, on what turned out to be the English Summer (the one day of summer England has). We walked around Guildford, saw some of the sights and chatted a bit. As you may or may not know, Guildford has a strong connection with Lewis Caroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. (Honestly, I didn’t know until Jennifer pointed out the statue :)

Anyway, Michiel took some nice pictures (such as the delightful one shown here). Check out the rest here. And don’t worry, Guildford isn’t all like this, but it’s there in Guildford too :)

Blogging pause

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

As you may have noticed, there has been an unprecedented lack of updates here. Thing is, I was writing this thesis thingy. Well, it’s submitted now, but the fun is only just beginning, so don’t expect much in the way of updates in the coming month. There will be some holidays, some frantic working, and not much space for blogging.

Will let you know what’s going on though. Short short version is in the previous paragraph. Slightly longer: thesis submitted, weighing in at about 175 pages (some more to be added though, will pass 200 probably). Journal publications 3 weeks before the thesis deadline are not necessarily a great idea. :) Although they do have their positive sides :) Vote-ID 2009 is plodding along steadily, submissions are slowly coming in. Holidays are long overdue. Really long overdue. So I’m taking them. Talk to you after them!

Sidenote: lost my login info for the blog, took me a while to straighten that out :)

Wake up & SPORT!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Woohoo! It is 9:00 right now, and I did my sports for today already! Running went especially okay — well, the first 45-50 minutes at least. Since I ran for an hour (as planned), that is really perfect! Am forcing myself right now to have breakfast. After the exertion, my body is not really in the mood for digestion, but it does seem unwise to hazard starting the day without sustenance.

Got a potential holiday / long weekend coming up too, will check on that today. All in all: things could’ve been worse :)

Now playing: Super Paper Mario (Chap 2-4).
Now reading: Walter Moers – Die 13½ Leben des Käpt’n’s Blaubär

Efteling vs. Ikea!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

And the winner is….

Or perhaps first let’s start with a description of the battle. On the one hand, weighing in at “a way to occupy part of an unplanned sunny day”, on the other “the planned trip full of ‘oh-my-gosh-you-gotta-see-this’-es and ‘ooh-let’s-go-there’s”. In the red corner, the fun-heavyweight-champion Efteling on a none-too-busy Sunday, packing a brand new ride and a record low number of breakdowns (noticed only one in the Fairytale Forest). Aaaaaaand in the blue corner, the Swedish furniture giant, the company who has given names to most things in your house, the place any family loves to hate to go on the most crowded days of the year: IKEA!!!

Driving to .nl for the Pentecost weekend went relatively quickly, only two small traffic jams on the way. We arrived perfectly on time at my brother’, and enjoyed a (very) nice dinner there, and a nice evening outside. The next day we had little plans, so we got up at our leisure, and then decided to check IKEA. I had been meaning to go there for a while, but not for anything specific. And Maren likes going to the IKEA. So the decision was easy. We quite quickly came across lazy chairs, which reminded me that I had this vague plan of having a nice, comfy chair to read in or relax in or whatever — something to occupy the gap between a desk chair and lying on the bed, basically. IKEA to the rescue with a fabulous Boliden chair (which, in my mind, trumps the Pello chair by a mile and the Poäng chair by a footstool). Moving on, I examined some possible kitchen furniture — still looking for something to put a subset of {pots, pans, cutlery, herbs, spices, food} in.  Maren came up with this fabulous and elegant suggestion for my kitchen woo’s: use a kitchen cabinet. Funnily enough, I had only considered approximations. Somehow the idea of purchasing one lose kitchen cabinet seemed a bit weird… but better and better as I considered it. After looking around the kitchens, we found one matching precisely the available dimensions. So we marked down a Faktum as well. We even managed to find a laundry bag. Just going to Ikea and looking for stuff that might be of use, having no prior plans, was a very relaxing way to stroll through Ikea and find all sorts of useful things. Plus, I have this amazing comfy chair, and this hip new kitchen cabinet (well, almost).

The next day we went to the Efteling. We arrived in the early morning, just in time to see the park officially being opened. First things first: Dreamflight was only queuing for  five minutes. Woohoo! We managed to check out all thrill rides save Monsieur Cannibal (if that can be called a thrill ride) and the Piraña (Maren doesn’t like getting wet). Oh, we also missed out on the Bob, basically because it was not worth the wait. The Flying Dutchman we did do, and it is a very ingenious ride: actually combining a boat system (like Fata Morgana) with an actual rollercoaster. Very clever combination. Also: way too short. Sorry, but there’s just not enough thrill. The Python is cooler, of course. But by the time you start to enjoy it, it’s over. I imagine that one can hold their breath for the entire rollercoaster section of the ride. While in the ride, mind you. And, it wouldn’t be that hard. Doing that in the Python might be possible, but it requires biting back some reflexes. Doing that in the Flying Dutchman would probably be easy. Aah well. Innovative, so check it once.
Fairytale forest was of course a highlight. As was Fata Morgana. All in all many impressions in a short amount, but somehow, for me, I don’t know… the cozy atmosphere seemed less. Maybe also partially due to the weather (insanely good), but it just didn’t have that normal homely feeling that I always enjoy. Well, have had my fill for the near future, that’s for sure.

So that makes it clear who, exactly, the winner is :)

Recent events

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

As some of you might have hear, my boss, Sjouke Mauw, held his inaugural lecture on Tuesday, the 29th of April. A nice addition was that he gave it in the lecture hall in my building — as in, my home. For those of you wondering: SHAME ON YOU! This is like, so incredibly the first stop on the Tour de Maison here!! So if you don’t know of this, you’ve been way too long in visiting here!! ;-)

Anyway, having said that, slightly more serious now: the lecture was a success (if you ask me). Many former colleagues from the Netherlands came over for the event, which made it even more special. The room was almost filled to capacity — a neat feat considering there are over 100 seats in the house. I had the opportunity to be involved in some of the details, and it was my pleasure to do so. Of course, there was plenty of last-minute stress, but in the end, the lecture went without a hitch. The aftermath was even more fun — a chance to catch up with some of the attendees from far off as well as enjoy local company (of course).

My parents were amongst the attendees, and the next day the three of us went by car towards Switzerland. My parents had planned a short holiday, and I was visiting Zurich once again. Getting to Zurich proved to be easier than dropping me off at any convenient spot in Zurich — my estimate is we drove roughly 45 min in Zurich before I got out. Then again, that is rather subjective, and time crawls when you’re almost-but-not-quite-yet there.

Zurich was once again a great place to visit. Ania was amazingly agile with her two crutches, even climbing stairs. Well, she had to, seeing as she lives on the third floor of a building devoid of elevators. Still, at one point she pulled down the staircase to the attic and climbed that one too — I doubt I would have.

There was much talking (but that’s private :P), much movie (10 questions to the Dalai Lama; Fool’s Gold (brainless fun), The Hulk 200? (not as bad as I remembered by far), and … euh… another movie from dvd), much sunshine, much polish girls, a trip to the Bodensee, some Zouk dancing (fun!) and, finally, a visit to the Großmünster church. It was fun, and I look forward to my next visit.

That’s a nice status update, so now for some outlook. To keep it a bit terse and tense, only keywords :p
Efteling, baby-bras, baby-cellus, paper submission, wote, sailing?, ikea?

House troubles (and other updates)

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Recently, several people told me they read this blog. *BLUSH*! Anyway, here is a short update to keep all you faithful readers up to date on current affairs. Apologies for the layout, don’t have time to do this in a nice fashion.

House:

  • Hot plates removed, day later wooden board placed to cover the gap (door was left open)
  • bought new hot plates, am cooking again
  • people are trying to complain all together to the University about this. This is an interesting balancing trick, because on the one hand people want this to be official (signatures and everything) and on the other hand, if it is official, it should be correct.
after several failed attempts (vexing some co-residents), one of the law students in the house came up with a 2-page letter in French, citing several articles of Luxembourgian law. Despite the official tone and my less-than-perfect understanding of normal French, my legalese is apparently sufficient to ameliorate this somewhat.
In any case, I discovered several errors, both insubstantial (missing ‘.’) and quite grave (incorrect date — date in the past for a future deadline).
Aah well, at least they’re trying. Gotta give them credit for that. Still, I will try to get the message across that next time, I’d like to comment on this sort of thing in advance.
Oh, for those wondering: yes, I am quite surprised that I could read a legalish text in French and find it less then perfect, but I could. There were phrases in there which I would qualify as questionable, and therefore not suited to such a document.
  • Heating problems are piping up again!
This would be a hilarious pun if not for the incessant pumping sound emitted from the pipes every time the heating acts up again. It was checked (checked only) diligently, apparently by the president of the heating company, last Thursday, and apparently this week the heating company is going to come by to fix the situation once and for all. For some weird reason, the noises were intermittent on Sunday and have all but disappeared from the audible contents of my room since then. Let us hope this pleasant state continues or even improves.

Furthermore:
I just spend the weekend in Cologne (with M., it was a very pleasant weekend). Learned one important thing: book train tickets for Germany at least 3 days in advance. Savings can run up to 50% — 62.5% if you have a discount card. And, that sort of savings is needed for reasonably priced train travel in Germany.

Also weird: in Cologne we ran once again into this German juggler, who has pink highlights in his dark hair (Ward: do you know this guy? Will try to get a better description). Last time we had seen him was in Trier (nice city, Baptiste is living there now), where he was doing his show. Once again, his show involved a lot of noise and little juggling.

Okay, enough updates, back to the 2 deadlines this week (Nuovo (done) and DRM reviews (done)) and the three deadlines next week (proposal: work, BFR report: work work, WOTE2008: WORK WORK WORK).

Hoopje Weekend

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Just returned y’day from the Hoopje Weekend 2008. It was really good to see the group again, and to catch up with people. Of course, in such a weekend you never manage to have a good talk with everyone you would like to catch up with. But I did enjoy myself tremendously :)

In a nutshell:

  • There were less games and more whisky for me this time around (although not that much whisky).
  • To me, it’s very nice if people make an effort. Case in point: Bianca baking pancakes for everyone, Sjoerd & Rinske creating a wonderful curry, etc. Not just grand gestures, but also the small things. And I really like that in this group, there is plenty of that going around.
  • Bringing the DS was not really necessary, and there was quite a bit of electronic gaming going on Saturday. That was a natural reaction to being lame, lack of sleep and not bringing a book, I guess :)
  • Being last to go to bed because of a very good chat is cool
  • Being first to wake up then is not really necessary ;)
  • Werewolves of Wakkerdam is a nice game, but can be played easily without the accessories (i.e. the game). That’s of course what happens with role playing games
  • I should pay more attention to the cards I get. Seer != werewolf :)
  • Ghost in the shell still is a cool movie. But not that fast-paced :)
