Buying a car in Luxembourg

Sunday, January 25th, 2015

With the new circumstances (job this far away from family), getting a car was becoming a necessity. So, I bit the bullet and went for it!

In a nutshell
I bought a Peugot 3008, and it’s awesome! Also: get your secondhand car in Luxembourg from Peugeot – Occasions du Lion. They’re genuinely helpful and friendly.

The full version
I had found a small apartment near work. It was unfurnished, so I went to look for the same sleeping couch as I had bought in 2009. The store didn’t have those anymore, and the ones that came close comfort-wise were ugly. So I went to Roller, a nearby furniture store. Turns out that there’s a Volkswagen dealer right next to Roller. Well, I needed a car in the near future anyway, and they were open, so let’s have a look!

Peugeot 307 (2007, 56.000 km)There was a Peugeot 307 outside for about €8.500. Price seemed reasonable, car was a bit old (2007), but mileage was relatively low (56.000km). I went in to ask to see it. The salesperson I spoke to was… let’s say “less than enthusiastic”. Renault Scenic (2010)I sat in it, and found it surprisingly nice – a quite high seat. I asked if they had other secondhand cars. The only other occasion was a Renault Scenic from 2010. I sat in that one as well. It was quite a bit bigger, and seemed comfortable too – but half again as expensive. So hmmms.

I hesitated, took Aga & Antoś to see the cars, and the day after, my parents came. My mom to play with Antoś and my dad to go car-shopping with me. First, we stopped by a former colleague of a friend of ours, who had a BMW for sale. It turned out to be a car from 2002. That was really quite old. Moreover, the couple’s attitude towards keeping the car in shape was basically to have it hauled over in the garage yearly. That’s a good attitude, but it might become expensive for a car this old… those two things made this a less-than-desirable solution. I need something reliable, not something that will give me worries.

So onwards. My dad & I stopped at the Volkswagen dealer, and both cars met taciturn approval from my dad. Not enthusiasm, more acquiesance. Well, okay. Then we went back home, and stopped at a secondhand cars dealer near our home. This dealer was not connected to any brand, and sold all sorts of secondhand cars: relatively new, rather old, big, small, executive-class, etc. That was just great – walking around helped very much to get an idea what kind of car and what kind of quality you can get for your money. This helped me to accept what the kind of car I would like will cost.

Then we stopped quickly at another Volkswagen dealer (even closer to home), to look at their small selection of secondhand cars. Most were quite over my planned budget, one or two would be a stretch but perhaps. We skipped the BMW secondhand dealer (Aga & I had already checked it out — all over budget), and went home. Then my parents went home, dropping me off to test-drive the Peugeot 307. It was a bit of a hassle. I almost felt like I had to apologise. In the end, after some forms and copying of driver’s license, we were off. “We” indeed – I was not allowed by myself in the car, and there was a prescribed route.

Anyway, having driven it, I remained unconvinced. To have a point of reference, I asked to test the Scenic. It was too close to closing however, so no more test-drives. However, they did allow a quick (accompanied) drive over the parking lot. That cemented one thing clearly: I did not like the Scenic.

I now was ready to buy the Peugeot. The salesman, however, was not ready to sell it. Still busy with another customer. The mechanic who had accompanied me suggested I just hang around and wait. Me, I had other plans though. I had passed a Peugeot secondhand garage three times, only 5 minutes down the street. So I figured I’d stroll over and tell them (basically) “Hi, I’m about to buy a secondhand peugeot, and not from you. Can you show me why I’m wrong?”

So I strolled down the street. In the stroll I managed to put some words to my uneasy feeling about the 307. Basically, once I no longer needed the car to get to Luxembourg every week, I would want to get rid of it as soon as possible. I would not want to keep it any second longer than absolutely necessary. That was a clear message: this was the wrong car. So before I walked into the parking lot with secondhand cars, I was already looking for other options.

Citroen C3 (2013, 35.000km)
Peugeot 308 (2013, 23.200km)

On the parking lot, I saw three interesting offers: a Citroën C3, a Peugeot 208, and a Peugeot 308. Peugeot 208 (2014, 46.750km)Prices were roughly comparable, sizes were somewhat comparable. I went in, to find two salesmen chatting. They immediately turned to me and were ready to help me. I said I’d seen a few cars which interested me. “Which ones?” “… errr… I can point them out…”. Up the salesman jumped and pulled on a jacket. “Let’s go then!”.

Talk about a different attitude! I think that was the point where I decided to buy from him.

We looked at the three cars, and made an appointment for a testdrive the next day. I came in Saturday with the buggy – kind of important to see if it fits in the back. It worked more or less in all three. But then the salesman said “You know, you’re a familyman. I’ve got 2 Renault Megane’s in the back. They have roughly the same mileage, price is roughly the same, but you get a lot more car for your money.”

Renault MeganeSo I figured we can have a look. And sure enough, that was quite a bit more car for your money – color me interested! So I asked to testdrive it. He drove it around, got out, passed me the keys and said, “see you in 10 to 15!”

Talk about a different attitude! Again! I felt genuinely supported by him. I test-drove it, and it was quite nice. I came back, ready to buy it. The salesman came out with news. The Peugeot 3008, which I had seen outside for a good price, was indeed for sale (apparently, it was an impounded vehicle which could not be sold before the bank okay’d it). I asked to test-drive it. We went there, but couldn’t jumpstart the car. (for insurance reasons, batteries of all cars parked outside have to be drained.) So he just passed me the keys to another 3008, and off I went.

Within the first 200 metres, a smile made its way to my face. I came back, smiling, content. This is the kind of car you drive for fun! I walked into the office and exclaimed “LA VACHE! Vachement chouette!” – my best way of sharing my enthusiasm in French :)

So that’s the one I ended up buying:

Happy New Year!

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

So many updates to post, I’m skipping a long story and going straight to the list-format:

  • Finished both Bowser’s inside story and Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box. (±36 hrs and ±18 hrs, respectively).
  • I visited Stijn, Maartje and Iris, was great! But that’s none of your business :)
  • I went to see Bobbie’s new place, it’s pretty cool but I came a bit soon — Bobbie hasn’t moved in yet (put in furniture, but usually sleeps elsewhere).  So, I better revisit him later :)
  • Visited Ronald as well, though failed to see his new house. Still wondering who will see whose house first, him mine or me his. Might make an appointment for the 23rd just to win ;-)
  • Bro came here, and we had the full ritual, and it was *good*!! inducto-gourmet, Battlestar, Mario,  Ikea, shopping, car… all the essential ingredients were there :)
  • Finished Battlestar Galactica, the reimagining. Not fully happy with the ending, but okay. Can’t win ’em all :)
  • Redecorated the place. It’ll probably be a few days before I’ve finished building the new furniture, actually :) But most has been done, and looks good, really good. Will take pictures.
  • New furniture offers new ways of storing stuff (finally! racks for in the garage!), so probably within $IMTOOLAZY I’ll have sorted out some of my stuff and make more use of the available space :)
  • Bianca and Matthijs are coming over next weekend!!
  • Dutch television is turning stupider and stupider. I’m not talking content, I am talking dubbing. It’s evil, it’s bad, and we should put a stop to it.  I mean, subtitles appear to be used more often in the news (to subtitle people talking Dutch with an accent) than for cartoons…

That’s it from the Bourg! Happy New Year to all!

Optimist by nature

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

I am having a great week! Running sucked, had cramps for two days. I got rejected by the owner of the house I had set my sights on (and the agency more or less promised me), some luxembourgian idiot rode me off my bike (still in one piece, relax), the housing agent for a new place didn’t have the right key to get us in, and there suddenly are more guys in our dancing class, meaning that we no longer have the luxury of picking girls, there’s an exact match now. On top of that, I lack sleep. Way too much.
Yet, I am happy :) And lucky :) Guess I am just optimistic by nature ;)

(okay okay, there are external influencing factors, but none of them are any of your business, you noisy folk you ;-)

Bro’s visit

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

As you may have read in a previous post, I moved. It’s just in the same building, so no biggie. Managed to move with some help from Sasa and later from Rogier. Luckily packing all the stuff didn’t take that much effort. Of course, unpacking is still ongoing…

Anyway, to begin at the start: I was moving, Rogier had the weekend off and I asked if he’d mind helping me out. I managed to get the key a bit early, so most of the hauling of stuff was done by the time Rogier came around. However, like last time he visited, my room is that much better for it. We moved some stuff around, put some stuff in it’s place and hung up some stuff. Only shame is that I am still missing a cupboard in my kitchen. They promised that I’d get one, and it would be brilliant not to have all of my kitchen supplies lying about in the rest of the room. Nevertheless, it’s already very nice, with a big thanks to my bro!

Anyway, some pointless but funny remarks on my old room, as a sort of farewell-post:

  • Funny story 1: when I moved in, two guys were smoking in my room!
Turned out to be my neighbor and a friend of his — the previous occupant of my new room. Since I moved in on the 1st, which was a Thursday, I took them by surprise. They figured that the new occupant would be moving in over the weekend.
  • Funny story 2: Once I came home late from The Netherlands. Tiredly, I opened the door, only to find my bed occupied! :)
Curious? Well, I won’t put the details up for public scrutiny, but the whole situation was resolved within a minute. So no big surprises here ;-)
  • Visitors:
    1. Big Mark — first weekend in Lux, first visitor in Lux! That was really cool!
(still haven’t finished LotR 3rd age btw ;-)
    2. Rogier — my room was a lot more like home afterwards
    3. Mom & Dad — short visit, but good that they could see the place once
    4. Ania & Marek — surprise visit, wonderful they stopped by, sucky my phone kept on crashing
    5. Ania, Marek & Klaus — chocolate od, 2:18:10, party, casematten, … phew

This is of course excepting all those with a base in Luxembourg (so SaToSS members and those related to them are not mentioned)

  • And that’s just scratching the surface ;-)

Hope that in three months time, you’ll help me to have at least as much to say about my new room.
Current mood: good!! fine music to match: Praise Cats – Shined on me

Moved!

As some of you may know (especially those that visited my room), room 210 at Avenue Pasteur, 102a was not really that big. It was a place to stay, and I did have a nice neighbor, but space-wise less then optimal. Hence, I asked for a bigger room.

I got one.

:) :)

Now I have some space for guests. So, who’s going to be the second non-luxembourgian resident to check out my new room?

Snailmail!

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

I’ve received some snailmail (from uncle Sjaak & aunt Jeanne, Peter & Margot and Matthijs & Bianca). Thanks a lot all of you, it’s really nice to have just moved, come home after a day of work and find a nice card :)

Living on my own, part deux

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

So, I’ve been here for a week, spent a fortune on food (overcautious, I guess…) and of course the inevitable happened: some of it expired :)

Well, I’d say “learned my lesson” except that I am pretty sure I haven’t (yet), but this is kind of funny. Thanks to all those wonderful dinners at friends, I am able to cook without making a complete ass of myself in the kitchen (thanks for that, you all!). Unfortunately, it also means I am used to cook (and hence shop) for more than one person — actually, I am kind of used to buying stuff for at least three people. Well, that’ll leave me with way too much food :) :)

Speaking of that, I’ve found an Auchan near my office (5 minutes by bike), which is a very nice big shopping mall. They have everything (or at least, so it seems now)! And, thankfully, much more decent prices than the Cactus I went shopping on the first day. Still, you have to pay attention… e.g. yesterday I planned to make something with chicken fillet. Turns out that chicken fillet is twice (or more) expensive than what I am used to :S

I cheated and switched to pork :)

Une grande BONJOUR de Luxembourg!

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Bienvenue a Luxembourg!

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

So, I’ve moved, with a great big thank you to my Dad. Got set up, did some shopping, took some pictures (of the new apartment), shopped (*sniff* my first genuine shopping on my own *sniff* (kind of scary, normally if I shopped, I took it somewhere that had some supplies, but this time: no supplies whatsoever. Forget something –> go hungry ;-), waved my dad goodbye and then felt a bit tired. Getting up at 6 will do that to me :)

Anyway, the people from uni.lu I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so far all are very kind and helpful, and that is a big relief. The room is not too big, but I’m just by myself (so when are you dropping by? Huh??). Kitchen, bathroom and toilet are shared with one neighbor, who is a cool guy. Kitchen is completely duplicated — very small kitchen, but there’s a fridge for him and one for me. Dinner yesterday was filled french bread (ciabatta, recipe in English). Quick, easy and filling. Lunch today was creative, better and easier :)

Ok, off again to the uni.lu to check if they arranged it so I can do some work there. Write to you later!!
